Photos of the Ecrins

This page lists all my photographs of the Écrins which I was able to take during my many hikes in the area. The Écrins massif, located in the French Alps, covers an area of over 900 km², making it one of the largest Alpine massifs. Bordered by the Oisans valley, the Champsaur massif, and the Romanche valley, it offers an impressive panorama.

It houses important glaciersboth in number and size, and boasts two peaks over 4,000 meters high. In fact, the Hautes-Alpes department bears this name because the Barre des Écrins was indeed the highest French peak before Savoy was annexed to France in 1860!

Among its emblematic peaks, the Barre of the Écrins It reaches a height of 4,102 meters, making it the highest point in the massif. The alpine history of this region is rich, with notable ascents such as that of the Barre des Écrins in 1864 by A.W. Moore and his guides.

Geology

Concerning geologyThe Écrins massif is characterized by a marked geological diversity. Imagine it as a vast mosaic of rocks formed over time. At the heart of this landscape lies a large boulder known as a granite pluton. Then, around it, a variety of rocks, such as anatexites and migmatites, spread out like a scarf. These rocks, often called gneiss, add a distinctive touch to the high peaks. Think of these gneisses as hats that majestically crown the highest mountains of the massif. In short, the Écrins massif is like an open book, telling the fascinating geological story of this alpine region.

The Écrins National Park

The Écrins National Park It covers over 910 km² in the French Alps. This vast mountain range boasts remarkable natural features and biodiversity, making it one of the most important national parks in France. Since its creation in 1973, the park has played a vital role in the conservation of alpine biodiversity.

The park is marked by diverse topography, including high peaks, glistening glaciers, deep valleys, and dense forests. Crystal clear rivers meander through the landscape, contributing to the rich biodiversity.

The park boasts a diverse array of wildlife, including iconic species such as the ibex, chamois, bearded vulture, and marmots. Golden eagles soar majestically overhead, adding a touch of grandeur to the birdlife. As for the flora, the park exhibits remarkable botanical diversity, featuring species adapted to alpine conditions, such as edelweiss and genepi.

National park designation entails a series of strict measures to protect ecosystems. This includes regulating human activities such as hiking, climbing, and skiing to minimize their impact on nature. Constant monitoring helps prevent harm to flora and fauna, thereby fostering scientific research to better understand and preserve these fragile ecosystems.

1. La Bérarde:
   Nestled deep in the Vénéon Valley, La Bérarde captivates visitors with its peaceful atmosphere. The stone houses, testaments to traditional architecture, tell the story of the inhabitants who have adapted to the harsh mountain environment. 2. Bourg d'Oisans:

3. Vénosc:

Once dedicated to woodworking thanks to the wisdom of a community close to nature, Vénosc has preserved its artisanal identity. The village offers an immersion in the past, where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary creativity.
4. Vallouise:
   Vallouise, perched in the valley of the same name, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Its history is marked by an economy based on agriculture and livestock farming. The remains of watermills bear witness to its past. Today, the village welcomes visitors seeking tranquility and authenticity.
