The Glacier Blanc and the Barre des Écrins. The Barre des Écrins is the highest point of the massif at 4,102 m—the southernmost of the 4,000-meter peaks in the Alps. The Glacier Blanc, which descends from its slopes, is one of the few glaciers still accessible without ropes or crampons. This photograph was created to illustrate the relationship between the mass of the glacier and the height of the mountain face.
